A picturesque city full of flowers and tiles
Atlixco, over 2 hours drive from Mexico City and in the state of Puebla, lies at the foot of the volcano Popocatépetl and is famous for its ornamental flowers grown in the fertile valley. The Zócalo or central square is surrounded by beautiful colonial buildings and churches and tiled benches sit under shady trees. Streets lined with brightly painted buildings, an ex-convent overlooking the city and a hermitage perched on top of a nearby hill make this an ideal place to photograph and capture the essence of central Mexico.
An interesting way to learn about the history and culture of this town is looking at the murals in the Municipal Building. Nearby the market has dozens of stands selling the local speciality "cecina" and every type of fruit and vegetable.
