An ancient method of cultivation on the lake
Centuries ago, the Aztecs in this area cultivated their food on "chinampas", man-made islands created out of mud and sticks and bordered by tall slender trees to fix them. They used canoes to get around the network of canals, pushing them through the shallow water using a long pole. Although this type of agriculture has almost died out, today there are still a few places where it has survived due to the efforts of local communities.
