Indigenous rituals and fields of marigolds
Day of the Dead or Dia de Muertos festivities are held all over Mexico but perhaps one of the most photographically interesting places to experience this celebration is in the state of Michoacán among the Purépecha indigenous communities. Entire families, along with their children, adorn the graves of their deceased family members with hundreds of brightly-coloured marigolds and candles as well as food and drink that they particularly enjoyed. On the 1st November they then hold an all-night vigil, spending the time with the souls of their loved ones.
Elsewhere in Michoacán, altars are set up with offerings, children dress up and sugar skulls are eaten.
