A former mining town with European influence
Once a thriving mining town, El Oro is now a peaceful Pueblo Mágico in the mountains about a 2-hour drive from Mexico City. Its unusual European-style architecture remains though the steam train has long disappeared. One of the original railway carriages has been turned into a café.
The Palacio Nacional, a white building with red towers, houses a mural depicting the mining history of the town and nearby is the Teatro Juárez, a beautiful theatre seemingly out of place in such a small place, but witness to the fact that this was once a thriving large town with a wealthy population.
