The first Pueblo Mágico, with unusual basalt columns
Huasca de Ocampo was the first town named a "pueblo mágico" due to the spectacular natural formations of basalt columns. Formed when lava was cooled by water, the hexagonal shaped columns are an amazing sight to see and photograph.
Nearby is the Hacienda de Santa Maria Regla, one of the largest ones in Mexico, built to produce silver items. Today it is a museum and hotel with an interesting history together with dark tunnels and sombre legends.
