Lakes, colonial towns, artisans and much more
Michoacán is a mosaic of shallow lakes and the famous butterfly fishermen of Lake Patzucuaro, misty islands like Isla Janitzio, and local cuisine. Morelia is one of the loveliest colonial cities with a rich historical past and internationally known cultural events while Patzcúaro's Day of the Dead festivities are unique in Mexico, drawing visitors from all over the country.
But perhaps one of the most unusual places is the now-disappeared town of San Juan Parangaricutiro covered by the lava flow of Mexico's youngest volcano, of which only the church towers can be seen rising up out of the black rock. And of course, wherever you go in Michoacán , you will find beautiful handcrafted works of art made from copper, clay and straw.
