Former mining town famous for its English-style pies
Real del Monte is a colourful "pueblo mágico" nestling in the mountains in the state of Hidalgo. This former mining town conserves its cobbled streets and tin-roofed buildings, many now housing restaurants and cafés selling the famous "pastes" or the Mexican equivalent of Cornish pasties. In the 19th century, English miners from Cornwall were in charge of the mines and this particular dish is one of the legacies they left behind. The other one was football which was first introduced into Mexico in Real del Monte.
