Smart colonial town and cobbled streets
San Miguel de Allende is a well-preserved and restored colonial town, the home of many North American residents. Its main landmark is the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, an unusual pink-stoned church supposedly inspired by the Gothic churches in Europe and one of the most photographed churches in Mexico. The centre is a polished series of cobbled streets, art and craft shops, upscale restaurants and hotels.
The main square is where the mariachi bands and balloon sellers hang out, offering their services to tourists. Picturesque weddings take place in the churches and the bride and groom are serenaded by musicians and clatter along in horse-drawn carriages.
