Unique and unexpected
Santa Maria La Ribera was created in the late 19th Century for wealthy residents who wanted homes outside the city. Although it began to deteriorate in the 1950s, it still retains its traditional character. The most outstanding feature of this neighbourhood is the Kiosko Morisco but it also has other interesting sites such as the spectacular Vasconcelas Library. Some of the unusual architectural features of this rather decaying barrio apart from the amazing Moorish Kiosk in the centre of the park are the Geology Museum, the Byzantine-style church and El Chopo Museum, a Jugendstil-style iron and glass building shipped over from Germany in 1903.
