Canals and flat-bottomed boats
Modern-day Mexico City sits on top of the original Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan. In those days, the Aztecs founded their great empire on some islands in the middle of a shallow lake in the Valley of Mexico. As the city grew and its population increased, the canals were drained and the lake all but dried up but there is still an area in the south of the city, Xochimilco, where the canals and traditional way of farming called chinampas can be seen.
